Broadly we are seeing two areas of law in relation to trees and the civil rights of those who live with them.
One area is Earth Jurisprudence, Rights of Nature or Natural Law that honours the sovereignty and innate rights of all living beings to life.
The other is that which is enshrined in human constructed legal systems. We celebrate human rights, principles of Free and Prior Informed Consent for Original Peoples and Nations and the many advancements that have been made that align with protecting and safe environmental innate rights. There is also a recognition that the law can also be manipulated, control or effectively erode innate rights and in this sense is not always used in a way that is in the best interests of beings of Nature.
